
Petunia is the world ugliest dog. A hairless French/English Bulldog mix, she was crowned the 2025 World’s Ugliest Dog, winning the annual competition at the Sonoma County Fair in California for her unique, wrinkled look. Thus, highlighting the contest’s message of rescuing and celebrating unconventional dogs.
A survivor of unethical breeding, the two-year-old rescue is now an advocate for adoption, inspiring others through her story and appearances. The World’s Ugliest Dog Contest, held annually at the Sonoma County Fair in California, aims to promote animal adoption and also challenge traditional beauty standards.
The contest celebrates dogs’ unique imperfections and raises awareness about animal rescue. Past winners include Quasi Modo, a Pitbull-Dutch Shepherd mix, and Wild Thang, a Pekingese.

Background: She was rescued from a backyard breeder in Las Vegas by Luvable Dog Rescue, along with 50 other dogs. Petunia had an elongated palate, making breathing difficult, she also needed surgery to fix breathing issues (BOAS) known as Brachycephalic Obstructive Airway Syndrome, a serious respiratory condition in flat-faced dogs (Pugs, Bulldogs, Shih Tzus) and cats (Persians, Himalayans) due to their shortened snouts, causing breathing difficulties and overheating, a surgery she underwent successfully to correct it.
Personality: A “gentle soul” who loves people, cats as well as other dogs, and often called “pinky” by rescuers due to her skin.
Significance: Her win promotes animal rescue, especially for dogs with special needs or unique features, and also raises awareness about responsible breeding. Petunia’s win highlights the importance of adoption and embracing differences.
Her story has inspired many, showcasing the beauty of imperfection. As Petunia’s owner, Shannon Nyman, says, “She’s a gentle soul who adores other dogs, cats, and people”.
Future: She’s training to be a therapy dog. And with her owner, is launching a brand (Wonky Dogs) to raise funds for other rescue dogs.
She’s now a happy, healthy dog, enjoying snuggling and trail walks.
