The First Seven Days with Your Kitten: Survival Guide
Congrats on your new fluff overlord. The first week is chaos + cuddles. Here’s your no-stress survival guide:
Day 1 – 2: Decompression zone (Goal: Let them feel safe, not smothered)
Do: Set up 1 small room = food, water, litter, bed, hiding spot. Let them explore you, not the whole house. Sit on floor, read/phone. No forced holding.
Don’t: Loud noises, chasing, introducing to other pets yet. They’re running on pure adrenaline.
Survival Tip: Feliway diffuser helps if they’re hiding nonstop.
Day 3 – 4: Routine + Trust (Goal: You = food + safety)
Do: Feed at same times daily. Start name + clicker/treat training. 5min play sessions with wand toy 2-3x/day. This burns energy + builds bond.
Don’t: Bath them. They self-clean. Wet wipes only if they step in poop.
Survival tip: Kitten-proof: hide cords, rubber bands, plants. They chew/eat everything.
Day 5 – 6: Confidence + Socializing (Goal: Expand territory slowly)
Do: Open door to 1 new room. Let them lead. Short gentle handling: touch paws, ears, mouth = easier vet visits later.
Don’t: Full house access yet. Too much space = litter accidents + anxiety.
Survival Tip: Litter box rule = 1 per cat + 1 extra. Scoop daily or they’ll boycott it.

Day 7: Vet + Reset (Goal: Health check + you survive too)
Do: Vet visit for vaccines, deworming, microchip check. Bring blanket that smells like home.

Don’t: Panic over every sneeze. Kittens get stress colds. But call vet if no eating for 24hrs, lethargy, or diarrhea.
Survival Tip: You need sleep too. They’re crepuscular = zoomies at 3am. Give play session before bed.
3 Universal Rules for The Week:
1. Wet food 2-3x/day + kitten kibble free-feed. They grow fast and need calories. Fresh water always.
2. Play: Tired kitten = good kitten. Wand toy > your hands/feet.

3. Patience: Hissing/growling day 1 is normal. Give them 3-7 days to become a velcro baby.
*Red flags = Call Vet ASAP: Not eating 24hrs, hiding + limp, trouble breathing, can’t pee/poop.
